Canada ranks skilled worker candidates for immigration through the Express Entry system using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates receive scores based on factors like age, education, language skills, and work experience. This CanadaVisa page provides detailed information on the Comprehensive Ranking System for Express Entry.
In Express Entry, the CRS points you earn for a Canadian job offer are based on the NOC code of the job:
If the job is in upper management, you get 200 points (NOC codes starting with 00).
For all other jobs in TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3, you receive 50 points.
There are various factors that make a job offer valid under Express Entry:
This is a special policy for physicians invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry since April 25, 2023. This allows their job offers, which must be in publicly funded medical services in Canada, to be valid under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). Here are some points to be noted about this policy:
These job offers are valid even if they are not continuous or do not last at least 1 year after the issuance of a permanent resident visa.
These offers provide points for arranged employment under FSWP selection factors and contribute toward the total score in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
The job must be full-time and non-seasonal.
It should last for at least one year.
The position must be in a skilled job classified as TEER category 0, 1, 2, or 3 in the 2021 National Occupational Classification.
Requirement | Description |
Job Type | Full-time, non-seasonal |
Duration | At least 1 year |
Skill Level | TEER category 0, 1, 2, or 3 |
Documentation | Detailed written job offer including pay and working conditions |
LMIA Requirement | Typically required unless exempt |
An LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is a kind of document that a Canadian employer should have in order to hire a foreign worker. This document shows whether hiring from abroad will help or hurt the Canadian job market. Employers need to prove they tried hiring a Canadian citizen or permanent resident first.
For Express Entry, you don't need an LMIA to apply, but having one can increase your chances because it shows a Canadian employer wants to hire you, indicating a genuine need for your skills in Canada.
If you are employed by an embassy, high commission, or consulate in Canada, or any other employer deemed ineligible by IRCC, your job offer would be invalid. There are also other aspects that prevent you from getting job offer points:
Aspect | Details |
Job Offer Points Eligibility | Not eligible for 50 or 200 points from a job offer if working on an open work permit without an LMIA (e.g., PGWP). |
Requirement for Job Offer Points | Employers must secure an LMIA to qualify for specific job offer points. |
Job Capability Verification | Immigration officers must confirm the applicant's ability to perform the job offered, especially in regulated occupations. |
Licensing and Certification | IRCC checks for the likelihood of obtaining necessary licensing/certification in regulated professions. |
Provincial/Territorial Role | Provinces and territories set certification requirements. |
Factor | Points for Candidates Without Spouse | Points for Candidates With Spouse | Details |
Total Points Available | 1,200 | 1,200 | Total points possible under CRS. |
Core Human Capital Factors | 500 | 460 (Principal Applicant) | Points for age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience. |
40 (Spouse) | Points for spouse's age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience. | ||
Skill Transferability Factors | 100 | 100 | Points for education, foreign work experience, and certificate of qualification. |
Additional Factors | 600 | 600 | Points for provincial nomination, job offer, Canadian education, sibling in Canada, and French language ability. |
French Language Ability | 25 or 50 | 25 or 50 | 25 points for intermediate French and low/no English; 50 points for intermediate French and moderate/high English. |
Sibling in Canada | 15 | 15 | Points if the candidate or their spouse has a sibling in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident. |
There are certain jobs that don’t need an LMA:
If you already have a work permit for that specific employer, based on a previous LMIA.
If your job naturally doesn't require an LMIA.
Your employer must obtain a new LMIA if:
Your current work permit has expired.
Your have an open work permit.
You receive a job offer from a different employer than the one listed on your current work permit.
Job Offer Example | Details | Validity |
Example 1 | Two companies hire a heavy equipment operator. Each offers 16 hours of work per week for a minimum of one year. The LMIA includes both companies. | Valid |
Example 2 | A construction company hires a plumber for 25 hours per week on a non-contract basis. | Not Valid (A full-time job must be at least 30 hours per week.) |
During the procedure, you might come across various challenges. Here are some of those and how you can handle them:
Challenge | Description | Advice |
Employer Nervous About LMIA | Employers may be apprehensive about the LMIA process. | Discuss the LMIA process with your employer and immigration representative, explaining alternatives like Provincial Nominee Program Employer Job Offer streams. Highlight the negative impact of not securing an LMIA on immigration prospects and suggest focusing on other areas to improve your points, such as language skills or looking for a PNP. |
Proving Genuine Need for LMIA | There's a risk of not proving a genuine need for your skills in the Canadian job market. | Work with a skilled immigration representative to enhance the likelihood of a positive LMIA. Consider professional help if you are unsure about the genuine need requirement or inexperienced with LMIA applications. |
Uncertainty About Need for Valid Job Offer Points | It may be unclear if a valid job offer is necessary for enough points to receive an invitation. | Evaluate your need for a valid job offer by working backward from your work permit expiry date, assuming continuation with the current employer in the same role. Consider consulting with an immigration expert to better understand your specific needs. |
If you get one of the highest scores in the draw, you will receive an invitation to apply for a Candian PR. Hence, if you are interested in the program, ensure to make use of every opportunity that comes your way to maximize your chances of getting an invitation.
